According to a recent Institute of Medicine report, up to one-third of U.S. adults report chronic pain. Chronic pain is a major cause of decreased quality of life and disability and is often refractory to treatment. WebPatients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are more likely to receive long-term opioid therapy (LTOT) than controls. In 930 participants, 13% of those with SLE and 3% of controls without SLE were receiving opioid therapy, and 11% of patients with SLE were on LTOT vs. 1% of controls.
